Which day trip from Naples fits you
Times are scheduled times and can differ on the day.
| Trip | Getting there | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Herculaneum | EAV train to Ercolano Scavi, about 15 minutes | Guided tours exist |
| Pompeii | EAV train to Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri, about 36 minutes | A guide or a combined tour can handle tickets and transport |

| Capri | Fast boat from Molo Beverello, 50 minutes | Weather and timetable dependent |
For most first visits with one day, Pompeii and Herculaneum make a good pairing. Choose Capri if the weather is clear and you want a day by the sea.
Herculaneum: the short train ride
Herculaneum, called Ercolano in Italian, is a short train ride from the city. Take the EAV Circumvesuviana line towards Sorrento and get off at Ercolano Scavi. From 17 October 2026 the Napoli to Sorrento timetable applies. The first example train leaves Napoli Piazza Garibaldi at 05:33 and reaches Ercolano Scavi at 05:48.
Do not confuse Ercolano Scavi with the Trenitalia station Ercolano Miglio d'Oro, which is a different stop.
Pompeii and Vesuvius
For Pompeii, take the same EAV line and get off at Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri. From Napoli Piazza Garibaldi the first example train at 05:33 arrives at 06:09, which is 36 minutes of scheduled travel. This is not the same stop as the Trenitalia station Pompei.
Pompeii is also available as a guided day trip from Naples, sometimes combined with Herculaneum or with Vesuvius. Check what the entry fee covers before you book.
For Vesuvius, the Gran Cono is open only with a timed ticket bought online. The national park releases tickets 30 days ahead, 50 tickets for each 10-minute slot. If you want the crater, book as soon as your date is open, or choose a tour that includes the admission.
If you want to see finds from the area first, the Naples Archaeological Museum shows frescoes, everyday objects and a model of Pompeii.
Capri day trip from Naples
The island is a sea trip, so the weather and the ferry timetable decide how the day goes.
Fast boats leave from Molo Beverello in Naples and take about 50 minutes. Adult single fares on the fast boat are around EUR 25, EUR 17 for children aged 2 to 12 and EUR 5 for a piece of luggage. A small island fee of EUR 2.50 to 5, depending on season and operator, is added. Always look at the timetable and prices of the day you travel.
On the island, the Blue Grotto is a common stop, and whether it is open depends on the day. Guided Capri tours from Naples can include the fast ferry and the Blue Grotto admission. Our sister guide covers the ferry from Naples to Capri and how the Blue Grotto works.
