Our picks: San Gennaro catacombs tours

The guided visit with the entry ticket is the straight way in. The Holy Mile starts at the same catacombs and goes on through the district, and the San Gaudioso visit works if you want to do both catacombs on one ticket.

Visits are by hourly guided tour with obligatory reservation. The times are tour windows, not a free-entry period. Access for visitors with motor disabilities is currently closed, so do not plan on step-free access.

For most visitors who want both catacombs, start at San Gennaro: the same ticket covers one San Gaudioso visit within a year.

San Gennaro and San Gaudioso: how the ticket works

Two entrances, one ticket rule.

The San Gennaro ticket is valid for 12 months for a visit to San Gaudioso. It does not give unlimited re-entry to both sites, and it does not include the Ipogeo dei Cristallini.

The two entrances are not the same. San Gennaro is on Via Capodimonte 13. San Gaudioso is reached through the Basilica Santa Maria della Sanità on Via Sanità 123. Read the San Gaudioso page before you set the order of your day.

What you see inside

Two levels of tuff rooms.

The catacombs date from the 2nd century AD and expanded after the burial of Sant'Agrippino. They form two levels that do not lie directly above each other, with wide rooms cut in tuff.

You see bishops' tombs with mosaics and family tombs with frescoes. The tour covers them in the course of one hour, with the guide explaining the history of the burials and the site.

A social cooperative runs the catacombs as a cultural project in the Sanità. It is the operator, not a public authority.

Getting to the catacombs

Use the operator's address as your destination.

No metro entrance sits right at the monument. Use Via Capodimonte 13 as the destination in your map app, and check a current timetable for bus lines before you go. The Miglio Sacro, a walk on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, starts at the same address, usually at 9:30 a.m. Do not confuse the San Gennaro entrance with the one for San Gaudioso.
